A new year brings a fresh opportunity to work toward achieving your goals. Whether you’ve recycled the same goals for several years or you have something new to accomplish, it’s important to position yourself to succeed from the start. Here are a few ways you can ensure you stay motivated to make 2020 your most successful year ever.

Put Your Reasons in Writing

Motivation is everything when you’re trying to achieve something. It’s not as much about what you want as to why you want it. You can give yourself an edge by writing down your reasons for going after the goal, whether it’s to feel better, rise to the next level in your career, expand your mind, or learning to maintain healthy habits. When you feel your motivation lagging, return to what you wrote as a reminder.

Stick to a Schedule

They say it takes 21 consecutive days to form a new habit, so take some time to discover when is the best time for you to start. Break down your goal into tasks you can work into your existing schedule. Give yourself time and if you miss a day or two, jump right back on the wagon the next day. If your goal is to get up earlier every morning to go to the gym, start with a couple of days a week and grow from there. Don’t forget to reward yourself at the end of each successful week.

Enlist a Friend

Enlisting a partner to motivate and encourage you (and vice versa) will help immensely in staying on track. Launch a challenge and invite friends to join in. Create a Google Doc or use an app to check in on a weekly basis. Knowing you have to report in will give you extra motivation to stay on track. Avoid blasting an announcement, though, as research has shown that stating your goals publicly makes you less likely to work toward them.

Set Mini-Goals

Goals that take months to complete can feel daunting at first. But you can get beyond that by simply breaking those goals into smaller chunks that you can tackle on a daily basis. As you clear each milestone, you’ll be closer to reaching your larger goal while also having small accomplishments to celebrate.

Enjoy the Moment

Before you know it, you’ll be setting your 2021 goals and wondering how 2020 flew by so quickly. As you’re working hard to improve your future, make sure you take time to enjoy the present. There are techniques you can use to center your mind in the moment, including simply focusing on the details around you. You’ll find this technique is also useful in reducing stress as you work to meet your daily goals.
