The purpose of life is really to be happy, right? So why would we participate in anything that strayed from that purpose? The truth is that life is full of noise and distractions, but there is a way to live fully and stay centered amidst all of the noise.
Although this world is noisy, it’s also beautiful and full of wonder. We all have different ideas of happiness and we chose to live our lives based on what makes us happy. In order to meet that purpose and live our happiness, we must adopt what are known as intentional habits.
What are Intentional Habits?
Intentional habits are just as they sound. They are daily actions you intentionally decide to adopt in order to meet a goal. A good example is a habit of waking up early. This becomes an intentional habit when it has a purpose and a meaning as a part of your day. Intentional habits really revolve around the “why” as opposed to the “what”.
Ask yourself why do I want to wake up earlier each day? Perhaps it’s to adopt a meditation practice in the morning or to have more time to be active before work. Whatever your reason, the habits you’re hoping to established should have a clear purpose behind them.
How to Start Practicing Intentional Habits
Determine What Makes You Happy
Take your time determining what you want out of life. Think about the things that you value, these can be physical, mental, social, or spiritual. Once you’ve determined your values, think about how you can implement them into your routine, these become intentional habits.
A good example is the value of a healthy body. Your intentional habit could be consuming more water on a daily basis to hydrate your body and improve daily function. By always leaning back on that value of a healthy body, you are able to be more intentional and adopt habits that you can commit to.
Surround Yourself with Like-Minded People
“You are the company you keep”
This saying is incredibly true, and it is especially relevant when trying to cultivate healthy habits. If you are surrounded by people who share your values and support your initiative to create a positive and healthy life through intentional habits, you’ll be much more likely to succeed. As humans, we crave community and connection, so find a community that wants the same things you want. And seek connection with those who will support you and help you to reach your happiness.
Take it Slow
Nothing worth doing will be quick or easy. That being said, cultivating intentional habits is about the process. These habits shouldn’t burden you or create stress in your life. In fact, they should reduce stress and create a feeling of joy in your life.
The best way to start intentional habits that will last is to simply take it slow. Start by determining the habits you want to adopt, and then make a realistic goal each week around them. If you want to start a yoga practice but currently aren’t practicing at all, start a goal of practicing once or twice a week, and then ramp it up as your body and mind get used to this new habit.
