Healthy Habits to Include in Your Daily Summer Routine

Our overall health is made up of both our mental wellbeing as well as our physical wellbeing. In the summertime, it’s easy to lose sight of one or even both of those. With all of the BBQ’s, weddings, and nights out, summer is bursting with fun, and it can take a toll on our health.  This is no reason to miss out though! Life is all about balance, so enjoy the beautiful weather with family and friends, and use these tips to keep your health in check this summer

Hydrate 

This goes beyond just drinking 64oz of water a day. While that is also very important, you can also hydrate your body through natural foods. Some argue that “eating” your water may come with benefits that go beyond just drinking your h2o. Some of the most water-dense foods are watermelon, cucumber, and melon. If those aren’t your favorite, most fruits and vegetables will have a high concentration of water, so you’ll be reaping the benefits as you snack on any natural food.  Eating foods high in water content improve digestion, promote healthy skin, and even aid in weight loss! The benefits are truly powerful and will keep you feeling healthy this sunny summer. 

Get Your Rest 

We cannot overstate the importance of sleep. Especially during the warmest months of the year. The heat and humidity in the air cause more intense feelings of fatigue or “heat exhaustion” and those afternoon naps seem ever-so-tempting. By prioritizing getting your perfect amount of Z’s every night, you prepare your mind and your body to handle the heat and anything else thrown at you this summer. Research continues to show that those who have poor sleep habits are more likely to develop chronic diseases, and carry around excess weight. So the benefits of quality sleep go far beyond the dog days of summer. 

Protect Your Skin 

It doesn’t seem too long ago that it was common to lay out in the sun covered in baby oil to try and catch some rays. Luckily, we’ve learned since then that those rays we were catching were wreaking havoc on the health of our skin. Your skin is your biggest organ and debatably the most susceptible to injury.  Protecting your skin isn’t difficult, however. Simply by making it a habit to apply a high SPF each morning and throughout the day can lower your risk of injuring your skin and further down the road, developing skin cancers. Not to mention that SPF has been proven to slow down the development of brown spots, skin discolorations, and wrinkled skin. 

Move Your Body 

Last but not least! Getting at least an hour of movement in per day does wonders for your mind and body. This can be as simple as cleaning the house, gardening, or going for a relaxing walk. A great way to get your movement in and cool off this summer is to jump into a pool for water aerobics or simple lap swims. Not to mention this gives the kids a place to get their energy out this summer as well.  The kind of movement that will benefit you this summer doesn’t have to be complex or difficult, by simply getting outside and moving you’re already doing wonders for your health. We hope this summer has been enjoyable so far, and there is much of it left!
