Setting goals for your health is the first step toward living the healthy life that you want for yourself. We all have an idea of the shape or level of health we want to be in, and we all have to start somewhere. Many goals surrounding fitness are never reached or they aren’t maintained. Life is full of twists and turns and sometimes those things get in the way of our goals. We’ve come up with a few helpful tips to allow you to stay on track and maintain those healthy habits throughout the year and beyond.
Remember the “Why”
In order to stick to any kind of change, you have to have a purpose. Why do you get out of bed in the morning? Why do you feed yourself and the people who depend on you? Basic survival and making a living have kept us accountable for these kinds of actions. But your health is up to you. If your goal is to live an all-around healthier life in order to have more energy to play with your children or to feel good every day in your own skin, it’s useful to remember your “why”.
Remind yourself of why you’re making the effort to get to the gym every day by writing down your reasons before you even start. When you feel an excuse coming on, take those notes out and remind yourself why you’re working so hard.
Create a Routine
Meal planning, prepping, schedules; all of these are routines that have become important to those seeking a healthier, more balanced life. By creating a routine, you are training yourself to expect this new habit until it becomes natural. Studio classes that run on a schedule are a great way to get moving at the same time every day or week. Some things to remember when creating this routine are to be realistic about your time frames and don’t try to stuff your schedule if you’re used to a relatively relaxed day. Start small and in time you’ll become accustomed to your new routine.
Not all goals can be achieved at the same time. Prioritizing and being realistic about what you can focus on and when will help you get to your goals and maintain them. Make a list of all of the habits you want to adopt, then order them from highest priority to lowest. Focus on the first couple until you feel like you have the room to focus on more.
Be honest with yourself and know that everyone is different, you may be most successful focusing on one healthy habit at a time. The goal here is to reach your own personal goals, so try out different routines, and methods until you find one that works for you.
